No Comments on Toledo’s New Trash Rules: How to Handle the 2026 Bulk Pickup Limit
As a tenant or home owner in Toledo, Ohio, you probably remember the "unlimited" days.
While they were convenient, those massive piles became "rat hotels" and breeding grounds for insects.
To fight this neighborhood blight, the City of Toledo and Republic Services officially changed the rules on January 5, 2026.
Here is the “survival guide” for handling your trash under the new 2026 system.
1. The “5-Item Rule” & The 40lb Limit
The biggest shift is that you no longer need to call to schedule a pickup. You simply put your items out on your regular trash day.
- The Strict Limit: Up to 5 bulk items per week.
- The Weight Rule: Every individual item or bundle must be under 40 lbs.
- The “Sticker” Warning: If your pile is over 5 items or too heavy, the city will sticker it with a QR code explaining why it was left behind. If you don’t clear it within 72 hours, you could face a code violation fine.
2. Budget Update: The 2026 Trash Fee Increase
To fund these more frequent weekly pickups and a new city recycling center, Toledo City Council has approved a fee increase.
- What to Expect: Residents will see a $4 to $7 monthly increase on their utility bills starting in early 2026.
- The Benefit: This extra cost covers the shift from monthly to weekly bulk service, meaning you can clear out 20 items a month instead of waiting for one big day.
4. Big Cleanup? Use the Hoffman Road Landfill
If you have a heavy sofa or more than 5 items, the dump is your only legal (and cheapest) option.
- Free Disposal Days 2026:
- Saturday, May 30
- Saturday, July 5 (Confirmed as a new summer date!)
- Saturday, September 12
- Saturday, November 28
- The Rule: You MUST bring a photo ID and a current utility bill to prove you live in Toledo.
5. Pro-Tip: Mattress & Fabric Safety
To protect the health of our community and the sanitation workers:
- Plastic Wrap Required: All mattresses, box springs, and upholstered furniture must be fully wrapped in plastic. If they aren’t wrapped, Republic Services is authorized to leave them on the curb to prevent the spread of bedbugs.
Stay Ahead of the Move
The new rules are designed to keep Toledo neighborhoods clean, but they require some planning. If you are moving, don’t wait until the last day. Start putting out your 5 items every week starting a month before you leave!
